Artist Statement in progress...
What is our experience as human beings and how different is it? My work tends to focus heavily on the individual. I am fascinated by the multiple layers or dimensions every person possesses and the duality of humanity. I believe every person possesses the potential to do both unthinkable evil, and incredible good. In focusing on a singular person for each piece, I try to internalize and then communicate their unique story. When these separate pieces are brought together I believe it highlights the similarities between people, not the differences. I believe as humans we are so alike. I want my work to catalyze a person to empathize with someone whom they previously felt they had nothing in common with.
My current work is focused on people who are HIV positive. I have seen a lot of work around the subject of HIV both in the U.S. and abroad, but I felt like the existing work only looked at the subject on a macro level. I want to look at the effects of HIV on the most micro level. How it affects the lives of individual people? What is the human experience of being HIV positive? In order to accomplish this I work with my subjects very intimately, spending a substantial amount of time with them and getting to know them. I am also giving my subjects a point-and-shoot digital camera to capture their lives as they want to and only they can. This gives a unique insight into the subject’s life, and a beautiful dimension of collaboration to the work. Collaboration with my subjects is very important to me.
